Indoor Air Quality FAQs

Questions about air quality, filtration, and healthy indoor air.

QWhat causes poor indoor air quality?

Common causes include dust, pet dander, pollen, mold spores, VOCs from household products, inadequate ventilation, and pollutants from cooking and cleaning.

QHow do I know if my home has poor air quality?

Signs include allergy symptoms that improve when leaving home, visible dust, stuffy or stale air, persistent odors, and humidity issues (too dry or too humid).

QWhat MERV filter should I use?

For most homes, MERV 11-13 provides excellent filtration without restricting airflow. Higher ratings (MERV 14+) may require system modifications.

QDo UV lights really work?

Yes, UV-C lights effectively kill bacteria, viruses, and mold spores. They are especially useful for preventing mold growth on AC coils and improving air quality.

QHow often should air ducts be cleaned?

We recommend duct cleaning every 3-5 years, or sooner after renovation, if you see visible mold or debris, or if you notice increased dust or odors.

QWhat is the best air purifier?

It depends on your needs. HEPA filters capture particles, activated carbon removes odors and VOCs, and UV systems kill pathogens. Whole-house systems protect your entire home.

QDo houseplants improve air quality?

Marginally. While plants do absorb some pollutants, you would need many plants to significantly impact air quality. Mechanical filtration is more effective.

QWhat humidity level is ideal?

Maintain 30-50% relative humidity. Below 30% causes dry skin and respiratory issues. Above 50% promotes mold and dust mites. Humidifiers and dehumidifiers can help.
